Reflected Glory !

the very instrument

Just been watching a rehearsal DVD of the recently released HMV CD by I Fagiolini of the Striggio 40-part Mass 'Ecce si beato giorno' - which is at Number One in the classical charts this week and all over Radio 3, and which includes one of Richard's large A-Bass viols. This is an extraordinary gathering of the bright and beautiful in the UK early music world - 40 players and 40 singers drawn from several top professional groups, every one a specialist on early instruments or singing technique - it's as if a conductor had gathered eight of the world's top string quartets and expected them to form an orchestra! Andrew Kerr of The Rose Consort of Viols borrowed the viol for the recording - he may ask for another loan if the whole company goes to Florence to perform a concert of the programme as planned - we hope it has an generous and understanding owner.

If you want a listen go to
also a look at the viol which is in the front row, extreme right hand end, too big to miss.

The Very Viol and Richard's own A-Bass before it went to its owner - they really are huge, standing at around 5 feet tall and with a very wide finger-stretch between frets - repetitive-strains-are-us

That must be very pleasing! Extraordinarily beautiful instruments. And the camera loves them.
